I sold my soul years ago and use Google Contacts.  It's web-based (and I
use gmail anyway) and syncs to all my iOS mobile devices. It automatically
includes all the people I email with (your previously-typed addresses) but
in a distinct group so as not to 'pollute' your main list. Occasionally I
export an address list in .csv for printing labels for Christmas cards.
