"So what you say is a big improvement on the situation before the FSM. One
was not then free "to say what one likes as
one wants" back then. People who did so on the wrong topics on in the wrong
way were silenced and/or carted away. Speech
was not free then, and the consequences were more draconian that they are
today."

Hence my inclusion of the phrase about "consequences", Moose. I'm pretty
well familiar with the Berkeley events, and also those that have occurred
elsewhere. And still do occur. It's always the case that proclaiming an
unpopular position may have undesirable consequences, whether perpetrated
by the government or by individuals. I would argue that all that has really
changed is the reduced likelihood that one will be arrested for speaking
out in a public place, in the USA. But even that change tends to be be
strongly biased. The results tend to favor those who are clearly middle
class and white, and not so much poor and black. And nothing stops
overzealous prosecutors (often with political aspirations) in some
jurisdictions--at least not until they have ruined the lives of those whose
position they decided they disliked.
