I'll second Bob Benson's comments about media reporting. And while I've no
reason to doubt Nathan's reporting of the statistics, the reality is that
for reasonably cautious Caucasian people, safety in most areas of the US
and Europe isn't much of an issue.

On a broad scale, I've read in a couple of books* that those who work to evaluate such things have concluded that those middle class or above, living in contemporary first world places live in by far the safest situation in our history as a species.

Perhaps that very safety makes us paranoid? :-)
