I had a bizarre experience many years ago up on Drummond Island, which
is located just downstream from Sioux Saint Marie. (Michigan/Ontario).

I was up on the northern shore of the island, which is mostly a stone
beach. I drove out on the stones in my Pontiac Grand Am and got myself
stuck. The left front wheel proceeded to excavate a big anthill of
these red ants. Within seconds they were attacking the car and had a
good quarter of it covered. One wouldn't think that they would have
been actual Fire Ants because of the extreme north location, but given
that the seaway goes right through there, you never know what may have
just jumped ship.

I figure they were just red ants of some form, but I've never seen
them that aggressive before and I did get a few very nasty welts out
of the deal. Another thing they did, which had me puzzled was that
they used themselves as a ladder to climb the space up between the
tire and the fender.

Hopefully, whatever they were, the upcoming winter (it was already
fall), would have wiped them out.

Maybe Dean knows of some red ant varieties that occupy the northern
Great Lakes region which are super-aggressive.
