I had my Sierra Club membership too, until a particular presidential
election when they got so blatantly off the tracks politically. I was
in the midst of documenting a couple of serious toxic and illegal dump
sites and I needed help and was to bug off because it didn't fit their
then current agenda. As I recall, "Acid Rain" was the end of the world
as we knew it.

Within a couple of years after that, Sierra Club pretty much became
non-existent and irrelevant. I don't know or really care what kind of
clout they might have in California, but they certainly screwed
themselves when they tried to ride whatever bandwagon they could jump
on at that moment for fundraising purposes.

If I recall correctly, while the Reagan administration was very much
"kill every environmentalist suggestion", the Bush (I) administration
was actually quite progressive and was supportive of many changes and
reforms. In fact, it worked pretty closely with the Sierra Club on one
particular issue. Then the next election came around and they
brutalized him for doing absolutely nothing--which was a flat out lie.

I had dumped them four years earlier, but that really fried my goat.
They've gotten not even a penny from me since.
