Thanks, Moose, most helpful.

I heard you the first time, Brian. I'm
juggling several projects, not answering/commenting on posts in
chronological order and not finished with my first round with the Illum.
In particular, there are some problems with the software, and a new
version is due on 12/8, so some things I might report as problems may go
away, or not, in a week.

Quickie summary:

The tech works, allowing
amazing adjustment to focal plane and DoF, even beyond what that simple
statement suggests. Once all is said and done, and aside from novelty
web images where one may play with those factors interactively, output
to a 2D file is four MB, so not world beating resolution. ;-) I find the
tech spectacular, but how useful it will turn out to be, for how many
things, I don't know. (The new focus bracketing function on Oly E-M1,
E-M5 II and TG-4 will allow some similar things for those interested in
playing in post.)

The camera/lens is largish by my standards.
Everything on it seems solid and to function as per the manual (which is
available on line, to peruse) and as reported in reviews. It appears to
capture the "light field" properly.

The imaginatively named software,
"Desktop 4" is not entirely intuitive. That is in part unavoidable, as
some of the functions are new with this new kind of image file. OTOH, to
move the image around on the screen, which is done simply by holding
down the mouse button in hundreds of apps, one must also hold down the
shift key, so a few things are simply obscure, and there are no real
help file or manual. The tutorials on line are helpful, but not
comprehensive or indexed.

There are other ways in which Desktop 4
isn't quite ready for prime time, but I'm waiting for a week to see what
changes come with v. 5. I'm rather hoping that it is faster, too. Some
functions are slow on my far from slow PC.
