There are a lot of crap fish 'n chips in the US. But there are good ones, too. One must just be brave and try, take one's lumps on occasion, then remember where they have it figured out. You'd think with all the foodie stuff going on in Portland ...

Don't you think you should be doing some research, before next Fall? :-) (Did I have some pretty decent fish 'n chips at the pub in Waldoboro? At least the fish was good, as I may recall? I think we have different taste in chips.)

The place I mentioned, and mourned for a long time, was really an exception. A true Yorkshire-woman who really knew what she was about who had relocated for whatever reason to Berkeley.

One of the best I've ever had was at a rather upscale pub out in the country somewhere East of Liverpool, a whole plaice, perfectly fried. No newsprint, though. :-)
