I'm trying hard in my advancing years to put aside the silly prejudices of my
youth, including college basketball, and barbecue sauce. In the depths of my
soul I prefer North Carolina eastern sauce, the clear(ish) vinegar sauce with
all the spices floating around in the bottle. There are variations among the
sauces. My particular favorite, which I have not had in 30 or so years, is made
by Allen & Sons Pit Cooked Barbecue between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. But
truth to tell, I don't know if it's even still there.
Time was, I disrespected any other kind of sauce. But I have mellowed agreeably
and now will agree that other sauces have their merits, even Sweet Baby Ray's,
which once upon a time would have earned Five Abomination Stars from this
reviewer. And as I said, I have a taste for that SC mustard sauce, which we
could find at Green River Barbecue in Saluda, NC. I still am not fond of tomato
based sauces, but I am reasonable and polite on the subject. I even can stifle
myself on the subject of that, ah, food product the call barbecue in Texas. <g>
