The 4 engine or the 6 engine Antonov?

All four of those planes have been stationed here at Charleston AFB over
the years. I have learned to identify them by the sound of their engines.
The C-5 has a very characteristic sound that always reminds me of the
twister in The Wizard of Oz. Years ago, while working in my garage I heard
a big plane fly over that I had never heard before. I ran outside, and sure
enough it was a new one: a Russian Antonov transport. Never thought I would
ever see one of those. Impressive and really big.

The C-17 was a good addition to the airlift inventory as it filled
the gap between the C-130 and the C-141B. I nice theatre transport that
seems to have a good record.

Consider yourself lucky that you don't have any C-5s.

It was more interesting than I had anticipated, although I needed to check
my dictionary quite frequently: who would have known, for instance, that
“pre-morbidic” meant “not yet diseased”? I think that military doctors
make some of it up . . .

installed on a C17; this was designed after the Ebola outbreak when there
were fears that some Americans might need evacuation after contact with
such a serious disease. The aircraft apron was almost deserted (by USAF
standards) but there were more aircraft on that apron than the UK has in
total – we don’t have any C5s . . .
