I have got all three of them.

The first two varieties, the *M* and the *L M* have this weird lens lock
system, like the 9-18mm has and the filter thread is 40.5mm
The third the *II R M MSC* has a filter thread of 37mm

The third also has the collapsing lens lock. Goes directly from collapsed to 14 mm, but requires sliding the lock to collapse again. Once one has experienced the Panny 12-32 and 35-100 collapsing zooms, with a simple firm detent to keep from accidentally collapsing when going to minimum FL, the poor, unnecessarily clumsy design of the Oly 14-42 kit lenses and 9-18 becomes obvious.

The third also has a trim ring that uncovers a bayonet for auxiliary lenses, and perhaps hood(?). Some primes have a similar ring. Mine do not have the first "M" in ' "II R M MSC". The "II" means it's an optical/mechanical redesign. The "R" designates a cosmetic redesign and "MSC" is "MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism that employs a newly developed linear motor drive that enables faster, quieter focusing"
