You need to spend a little more time with the XPro1, Chris! Two-stage
magnification of the central part of the viewfinder, with the option of focus
peaking, AND a front-panel switch to select S-AF, C-AF or MF (but you only get
the MF aids if you have MF selected on the front-panel switch). That all makes
it a delight to use with MF lenses - think OM Zuiko! Even more so with a focal
reducer.
And I can't speak for Ian, but for me it is almost always that I choose the AF
point, never leave the camera to select for me, and for that, having AF
uncoupled from the shutter release is invaluable. Same would go for AEL, except
that I always have the XPro1 set to DR400, so exposure ceases to be critical.

I’ve read articles about that technique over the years but I’ve never been able
to see any advantage over merely using the shutter release. Although I
mentioned, in response to Jim’s query, that the focus ring can be turned while
in AF to refine focus, you have to have a MF focus aid visible to be accurate
with the focus. Since you don’t have a focus aid available (in my quick test
yesterday with an X-Pro1) it looked too difficult to me to use any manual focus
refinement – while AF was available, at least.
So what’s the point, old chap? ;-)
