In our neck o' the woods, a large turtle would be a snapping turtle.  But
even alligator snappers generally don't get any larger than 200lbs or a bit
over. And they're not common at all this far North.

So, it was most likely a large common snapping turtle, but they rarely
weigh more than 35lbs.

So, let's say it was a common snapping turtle combined with a healthy slug
of moonshine.
