Thanks Moose. Certainly now looks like a flash dominant shot with at tad of natural fill
rather than vica versa. I had added a touch of LCE to the b'fly but should have toned
down the background a bit more and added a curves layer. I will likely succumb to start
paying more Adobe tax soon enough if the newer tools become overwhelmingly compelling
individually or cumulatively. I have not had much luck with suboptimally lit flutterbys
at least in capturing the luminescent qualities of more newly emerged ones by working in
the digital darkroom. My working hypothesis is the structural colors really just require
the light on them to "pop."

I think you are right, it's not simple pigments. I think the same thing is happening with Red Winged Blackbirds. The red patches are nothing special - until the light hits them right. Then the red almost explodes.

Fill flash does the trick in many circumstances.

I"m sure you are right. But when that fails, those of us who weren't there can find a post processed version pretty compelling.

And then for me, fill flash just isn't happening. So I have my choice of shooting them in natural light when I come across them, or not shooting.

Perhaps we will be able to chase a few alpine b'flys. I have been boning up on
the ID's.

Good luck!

I hear our first scheduled trail still has some snow. :-(

A little snow isn't so bad, so I hope for less or none by the time you get
there.

If you don't hear from me in a while, send out the Zuiko sniffing St. Bernards.

Brandy? Or Belgian Ale?

Happy Hunting Moose
