I've searched the entire E-M1 (PDF) manual for "magnify" and "sub dial". I can find no mention anywhere about the sub (front) dial (or any other control) varying magnification in shooting mode.

Do you recall where you read this, Martin?

Hurrah! What Martin said. I don't know where that's written but it
works. Trying to absorb a 183 page manual and another 513 page book
that attempts to explain the 183 page manual can be a bit much at times.

There's still much function I've never used and probably much that I
still don't know about. Changing from a PC to a Mac or vice-versa is
probably a comparable learning experience. :-)

Mine's set at 5X. The front dial will increase/decrease the
magnification in steps 5x, 7X, 10X and 14X. However, can't remember if
I've set the 5X in the menus.

With respect to 'If anyone knows how to turn on magnification or focus
peaking with an MF lens I'd like to hear about it.' : The EM-5 has a
magnify command (which can be programmed to one of the buttons) which
will
magnify the view when using MF lenses. Different from the AF+MF setting
when you touch the focus ring of an AF lens. I assume your EM-1
offers the
same magnify command. The EM-5 doesn't have focus peaking, so the
magnify
command is the only way to go for MF with legacy lenses.

Does the magnify command reach the full 14X that can be reached on the
LCD? Does it go through stages, such as 2X, 5X, 10X, 14X, or just
leap to
highest magnification?
