You are changing the subject, John! You asked about using the M-adapter with
M-mount lenses, and I am very confident that you do not have any such with
auto/manual switching :)
Again, I am quoting from XPro1 experience, but I can assure you that the
focus assist features are not restricted to Fujinon lenses built for the
X-cameras - I have used focus peaking using a manual focus 35/2.8 lens made
for medium format in Ukraine, mounted on a Chinese focal reducer - nothing
Fujinon there, not even Japanese. I can't believe it is different for the
later bodies - but I can believe that the feature might not be obvious to
you!

I think it should be that the lens is in manual focus mode. I have two
auto / manual focus lenses ...... the 14mm / f2.8 and the 23mm / f1.4.
When these lenses are changed into manual focusing mode [by pulling the
focus ring towards the camera body] and the 'Focus Assist' button is
pressed the shooting / MF assist options scroll across the screen. Press
three times and the split image option appears. In both the EVF and on
the screen that grey rectangle appears with a close up of the
to-be-focused-upon area with the two horizontal out of focus area
clearly visible. Rotate the lens's focusing ring until the image is in
focus and fire. Viola ... ! Not quite as good as the split image
viewfinder in the M3 or the OM4T but quite a boost from having to rely
solely on auto focusing.
No to see if I can achieve the same result with a manual focus Leica M
lens. I rather suspect that the split image feature only works with
manually focusing Fujinon lenses built for the XPro 1, X-T1 and
subsequent generations of those cameras.
