Interesting to read about plastic shopping bags being banned in France.

Three years ago I visited a Waitrose grocery store in northern England with a large over the shoulder canvas bag into which I put my various items. I was quickly approached by an in-store security person who absolutely insisted that I immediately empty the bag into a push buggy OR face being ejected from the store with an order banning me from any further store visits. The reason ..............bring your own bags of any description and you would be viewed as a potential shoplifter! Taking you own carry bags to Canadian grocery stores is very much an accepted practice.

I'm confused. Were you putting the groceries in your bag before checking out? I can see them objecting to that. How easy might it be for someone with a bag over their shoulder to be looking at avocados near the doors, wait until no one is looking, then just walk out.

Here, where almost everyone brings their own bags, and signs in the parking lots urge one not to forget their reusable bags, it's still standard practice to keep one's bags in the shopping cart, empty, along with the goods to be purchased. They come together after being rung up.

I have seem the occasional person putting items directly into their bag or a personal, low wheeled basket. I assume they are the ones being most closely watched by the rent-a-cops.

Having been in the business, I know how much loss there is from theft. You think those security people don't more than pay for their salaries? Think again.
