It's written from a pedestrian photographer point of view. What
"normal" people would experience. But the fact is that if you aren't
processing your own B&W film, and controlling the whole workflow,
there is no way you will get out of the film anywhere new what it is
capable of. For that reason, digital is going to be "just as good" or
"superior" for the masses. But to effectively make claims that the
digital workflow with XYZ process software is "as good as medium
format B&W" is still laughable. It's as good when you do stupid things
to the film. But it's got as good when in the hands of a craftsman.

"You" means everybody but Moose. ;)

That all said, a good digital file and a good XYZ conversion process
does make for decent results. I've been quite fond of the B&W images I
get from the DLC-L1. I'm looking forward to trying it with the 6D
files. But not all camera files will bit bend as well as others. The
E-1 files don't go monochrome well, but the E-3 files do pretty good.
The L1 files can really do B&W quite easily.

But the nuances don't stop there. Of my OM Zuikos, the 35-80 zoom
doesn't do B&W as well as the old silvernosed primes.

A well-done silver-gelatin print from a medium-format or large-format
negative? Yummy. And best of all, unlike the digital darkroom, you can
dodge and burn in a way that looks right. Dodging and burning in the
digital realm does weird stuff. With film, I can pull stuff out of the
extremes, with digital, all you really get is increased contrast when
you try to pull stuff out of the first or last digital bit.

I ain't getting rid of the film cameras anytime soon.
