That's just one reason. They are able to make lenses that are sized to
what we want. By putting a lot of the correction in the image
processing chain, instead of optically, they are able to make lenses
smaller, lighter and have greater effective focal-length ranges. Cost
is a side benefit--especially if they are able to avoid using
rare-earth-glass elements and so forth.

The problem that I see to this is that we've moved on past the modular
approach to camera systems and have started marrying lenses to
specific sensor or body designs. You need an entirely different
correction algorithm when you go to a camera with higher pixel density
or a different filter stack. As long as the manufacturer supports the
lens/camera combinations going forward, it's fine, but as is typical,
once a new model of something comes out, continuing support of the old
item is discontinued.

A case in point, will Olympus provide an updated lens profile for the
original 14-54 for the EM1 variant coming out? The sensor is
different, the stack is different, everything is different. But the
lens profile, if included, probably dates back 12 years.
