It's not fun to pass over a nest with a power lawn mower. My wife was
stung many years ago. I know of deaths from anaphylactic shock. I
worried about my young lawn maintenance guy wearing shorts on his
zero-radius wonder machine. I figured it was time to let them go, and
this guy did it for FREE.

But that's rarely the case. They are scavengers. It's great hillbilly
entertainment to drink a beer and watch them pick flying insects right
out of the air. The nest dies in the winter and queens go off to find
nooks in which to over-winter. It's common to throw a log on the fire
in the winter and hear a bzzzz and then silence. You also learn to
shake your gloves out before putting them on on cool mornings. :)
