AGreed. I keep expecting Chuck to weigh in and the post never comes.

I could just bite the bullet and get an Apple along with a bag full of
dongles. <snark>

I do also value portability. And I'm going to go entirely to external
AND network drives for file storage. As to the portability, I've swung
back and forth on this a couple of times and I have to admit that it
is nice to be able to just relocate my world whenever I want. As it is
right now, I can only image edit at my desk. I'd like to have some
additional flexibility there to use other locations in the house.

I am a fan of Lenovo and have generally had the best luck with them.
Also, I will say that Windows 10 is FINALLY about the most stable and
reliable Microsoft operating system for LAPTOPS I've seen. While XP
was as rock solid as you could get, there were some security holes
that led to issues. Windows 7 laptops developed brain rot the moment
you turned them on the first time. Windows 8 was completely impossible
to use and both laptops in this house running it died a rapid death.
Windows 10 seems to stay pretty stable.

Yes. Certainly an issue that is coming to head for me. I already dealt
with one significant failure were I lost a couple years of images. My
primary NAT died (both working and protect drives damaged by the
controller) and my CDROM backups had failures. The only images saved
were those that were still on my laptop drive and those that were on
duplicate sets of CDROMs. Currently, I have my images on three sets of
drives, with one in a secured off-site location. I also have a number
of critical images stored up in the cloud. It's a pain, and I'd rather
go to an automated backup system, but I've seen too many redundant
systems go down when a problem propagated from one to the other.
