Not necessary. The Worcester Art Museum recently ended up with a large collection of armor. We've seen a limited display 
of it a couple of times. I wondered at first about the lack of a steel "cup", but soon learned that all his heavy stuff 
was intended for use mounted on horses, and there is thus no need for protection of crotch and rear end.
I found this piece of contemporary art in another section of the museum amusing in that regard.
