I would say that the first was a gerund (verb-as-noun), the second an adjective
made from a noun a gerundive. But Wikipedia has an article that denies the
existence of the gerundive in English, for the most part.

I remember still the first lesson on Gerunds and Gerundives in Latin, more than
50 years ago not the content of the lesson, but the title on the next page in
our Latin textbook :-)
