I don't quite understand the concerns.

1. You may choose to photograph the eclipse or not.
2. You may choose to arrive early enough and stay up in the hills at
our dispersed camping site and avoid the crowds.
3. What better place to "experience" the eclipse, cameras or not, than
the Grand Tetons?

The idea behind my location (or locations, as I'm developing a list of
backup places) is to be at the prettiest spot to enjoy the eclipse,
not just be subject to it. I've been researching the shooting
locations to be able to see the shadow envelop the mountain range and
actually see light and dark at the same time.

That's MY GOAL. Shooting the sun itself is rather pedestrian. As good
as a job that I'll be able to do with my gear, there will be 10
million photographers across the USA doing a better job with
telescopes and tracking mounts. I want to see the eclipse interact
with the landscape. While I can just as easily do this down in Kansas
City and save myself two weeks of vacation time, I'd rather go to one
of the best landscape spots in the country and see the eclipse
interact with it.

This is why I picked this location for myself. In looking at pictures
from it and other optional spots, I'm happy with what I'm seeing.
Could it be better? Sure! I would happily shoot the barn and not have
a single other photographer there, but that's not realistic. I'm not
saying that I WON'T shoot the barn, but that might be with a secondary
camera or maybe even with a drone.

As to Moose's concerns about crowds in August? Tough nuts, bud. I'm
not the one who scheduled the best eclipse in my lifetime at a
location right at the peak of tourist season. It's no worse than
living in the Bay Area, anyway. Take it up with God. He's the one who
scheduled it.

On a side note about summer schedules, there is one saving grace to
this. The peak of tourist season actually ends about a week earlier
now, because of early school starts.
