  I too lost a timing belt on a '98 VW Passat. Ruined the head but I was
lucky. That car had three available engines: 1.8l turbo (which mine had),
2.0l diesel and a 6-cylinder gas engine). The owners manual instructed that
the timing belt in the diesel and 6 cyl gas be changed at 85K, but said
nothing about the 1.8l. VW paid for the whole job much to my surprise.
