It is said that the journey is often more fun than reaching the
destination, in this context I'd add that maybe the definition of the
journey is a completely different thing for some. :)
I always enjoyed tinkering with my deadly treadlies (pushbikes), and
this carried forward into my cars... but this was always a practical
thing to keep them on the road... (Hey, I can screw my car up just as
well as the dealership mechanics did last time I took it there, but for
free :) ) I suppose why this is why I ended up in specialist technical
roles in my working life - it's the challenge of doing it, and the
satisfaction of a good result*!
My cousin likes cars and motorbikes, and his 'journey' is restoration,
once it's finished he usually flips it, unless it is something he
*really* likes... He might spend a year or more and still just let it
go... I don't get it :)

* good results are invariably few and far between where a certain
(should be desktop only) operating system starting with 'W' is used in a
server role...
