Not sure would have anticipated the change in image size, but now that you sussed out how it works, makes sense to me. Have always liked many images from that odd ball lens.

It does a great job of introducing softness that doesn't reduce resolution,
just contrast and micro contrast/acutance.

The stacking programs all can align the images with moderate changes in size from using the focusing helicoid though they are easier to align if the sequential images were taken using a rail.

Are you saying they resample to match size? Resampling such small changes should inevitably introduce artifacts. Fine, if the stack is going to be blended so that only one slice is used at any given point. Not sure how it would work for what I want to do.

What all these soft focus solutions do is introduce glow (aka, veiling flare). Glow may a fine thing, in some uses, and I do use it.
HOWEVER, in this project, I'm looking for something else, natural edge softness
without any effect away from edges.

Perhaps these pictures will be worth a couple thousand words? <http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/tech/Soft%20Focus/Nikkor%20Softs/OMZ85f2_Niksf1.htm>

A pretty limited subject, but I'm learning as I go and need to start with something where DoF, soft edges, etc. don't confuse me.

The second version could easily be made with any of several soft focus lenses - at wide apertures. The next two apply masks that only let the soft version show right around high contrast edges. I'm not sure everyone on the list will see a difference between them, but the overall effect should be clear.

This isn't where I am headed, but is a step on the road. Using the soft filters, I should be able to get gentle edges, while retaining detail, WITH deeper DoF AND no overall loss of contrast.

I think combine Z allows one to align the layers (more accurate choice) but not proceed with the stack. Not sure about Zerene stacker but it certainly doesn't have a problem with moderate changes in mag. Perhaps the auto-align layers fxn in PS doesn't lead to that many gremlins.

Well, it doesn't adjust size.

(Anyway, there are few gremlins that can't be vanquished by a determined Moose)

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm not sure of my success with all, nor particularly interested in heroic effort when there's a simpler solution.
