Proprietor, not founder, although he is the one who ran it forever and made it famous outside of KC. According to Wikipedia, he is also the one who added some molasses to Henry Perry's original vinegar based sauce.

His sauce is vinegar based, like some east coast sauce, and it is delightful.

I ate there in the late 70s.when Arthur was still actively running things, including greeting customers, then hustling them into the line. The Q was excellent. The huge steel basket full of cuts of meat in the smoker/oven was sure impressive.

I recall thinking that the whole place was probably held together with grease. EVERYTHING, was greasy, although I didn't touch the ceiling. From current pics, it appears that some time after his death, someone seriously steam cleaned and repainted the whole place. :-)

At that time, it was in what looked like a disaster area, about the only 
healthy looking building standing for blocks.
