Instead of suppressing the background I may consider blowing it so you concentrate back to your object.

For your image, my preference is to put the object to a brighter tonal range by using "S" curve.

Hmm, Thanks Dr. A. Light.  i briefly started down that road in a levels 
adjustment but backed off as liked the subtlety of the peach as it was.  It was 
a split second decision.  I did move the brightness down in the background but 
you further did so.  Perhaps you enhanced the contrast too---curves?  Now that 
someone else has done a nice  alt version, can't decide.
