     I was out Goodwill Hunting yesterday and came across a curious item.  The 
framed paintings, prints, and photos tend to be pretty humdrum, but my eye 
caught a large framed photo of a WWII assault transport.  Since I have an 
interest in such things and the pgoto was in like new condition I bought it.

     The ship turned out to be the USS Zeilin (APA-3, earlier APA-9) that was 
built for the navy in 1921, saw commercial service, then returned to naval 
service 1940 and configured as an assault transport.  It saw extensive service 
in the South Pacific and was badly damaged by a bomb which ruptured the hull 
and carried away the starboard propeller shaft.  A thumbnail history is here:

     The photo in the Wikipedia page is the same as the one I came home with, 
though a little cropped left and right.  In mine, the north tower of the Golden 
Gate Bridge is clearly visible.  Here's a larger online copy:
