Is there any feedback on your recent exploration of downtown Anchorage
photo shops?
A google search showed that Stewart's Photo at 531 West 4th is quite a
place a visit.
Looks to be better than anything we have east of Toronto !

The workflow management of Capture One and Lightroom are the reason to
use them. I don't care so much about the entire asset management
capability of each because I prefer to use my own directory structure
and keep things vendor independent. That's one reason why I also stay
miles away Adobe's proprietary raw format. Keeping a modular approach
to this means that I can swap out software systems with fewer worries.
HOWEVER, all the keywording is an issue.
I did some tests with DXO last night and definitely see some
advantages to the raw converter. But the whole workflow experience is
pretty immature. And that automatic "get me in the neighborhood"
button still sucks kybo water. Capture One takes you much farther in
the first five seconds than I can get in five minutes with the others.
However, it looks like the final 5% of tweakability is better with DXO
and Lightroom than it is with Capture One.
My one concern with Lightroom is that Adobe seems bent on making
Lightroom "classic" EOL (end of life). But there is a pretty loud
outcry on that, so we'll see how they mature out the new version.
While there are aspects of Lightroom that I find rather stupid. OK,
EXTREMELY stupid, overall, it does nearly everything I need and then
some. Functionally, it lacks very little. The greatest weakness of
Lightroom is the ACR engine underneath. Honestly, I think the $10 per
month for CC (Photoshop/Lightroom) is pretty acceptable, as compared
to the normal version prices that came before. Capture One is twice
the price and doesn't include Photoshop nor 50% of the features that
Lightroom has. Adobe's pano-merge function is what keeps me very
interested.
Back to DXO, I'm very impressed with the ability to drag out more
image details from the 6D than the others. However, SILKYPIX is very
close. I don't care for how DXO handles highlight recovery on the 6D
files. While the colors tend to stay neutral in the highlights (unlike
Lightroom), the amount of recovery appears to be much less and the
point of correction and slope is different than what I'm used to.
Speaking of Lightroom, the recent update to Classic includes a nice
new function. On import, use the "Embedded & Sidecar" option. This
imports the JPEG file that is part of the raw image file and displays
that right away when you doing your image culling. Nothing is more
frustrating when you are trying to fly through 2400 wedding pictures
is when you have to wait 4-5 seconds for images to draw on the screen
for rating purposes. With this function, the image snaps up on the
screen right away, you can quickly determine if it's a keeper and move
on to the next. If you need the Lightroom generated standard or 1:1
view, it will calculate it and display it in normal time. But most of
the time you can determine whether or not it needs further attention
in a second or two.
