That works, but only if you lock the exposure down. I'm letting
VueScan adjust the scan exposure. I'm getting only 1-2% that need
corrective scanning afterwords. Otherwise what happens is that I'm
pulling up the shadows too much and with the Fujichromes (50 and
Velvia) the shadows are blocked up solid. The longer scan exposure
will add exposure time during the scan to boost everything up, but
still does a reasonably good job of protecting the highlights. If you
just do the locked down scan exposure, the gain boost occurs post
scan. Also, with some very high-key slides, it will pull the exposure
back a touch to keep everything from washing out in the scan process.

Do keep in mind that this works for me now. It didn't last year. A few
software upgrades has done wonders.
