Quite the tale--perhaps you can post a couple images demonstrating the

Not much to see. Just a straightforward tripod. It's the details photos don't really show that make the difference. <https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/322184-REG/Velbon_ELCARMA_630_EL_Carmagne_630_with.html> The listing for the one I bought. <https://www.ebay.com/itm/VELBON-tripod-El-Carmagne-630-and-Velbon-with-Ball-Head-QHD-71Q-EXCELLENT-w-bag-/273113199272?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&nma=true&si=JCvOKSOogFkFu3%252Bx5rd5fJ%252Fs06c%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557>

The twist leg locks of my Papa Bear Gitzo are a bit of a pain, but love the
ability to cantilever the center column.

That's the center column mounted beside the spider? Always looked awkward for normal use to me, but I've not tried one. I think they've been discontinued for some time.

The Manfrotto 190CXPro3 (replaced by the MT190CXPRO3) I have as a lighter duty, more travel-able model does the 90° thing quite well. <http://galleries.moosemystic.net/MooseFoto/index.php?gallery=Tech/Misc&image=IMG_1116croofm.jpg>

It was with us all across Bhutan, just never got out of the suitcase. I do occasionally use it when I need the horizontal trick, but prefer the more solid models without tricks at home most of the time.

The Baby Bear sirui T-025x has its advantages and one can remove the center
column to go lower. The smallest leg section really is not adequate most of the
time due to flexing. It is very very portable and mostly does the job
especially when weighted.

Twelve leg locks!? I would end up throwing it as far as I could away from me. I remember it. It's cute, but I could never use it.

Casually on the look out for a Mama Bear 'pod that does the 180 deg trick for
portability yet has a center column capable of cantilevering for macro--never
have seen one and may be an engineering issue.

There's this. <https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K9WEV76/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1>

It doesn't appear that they sell the horizontal arm separately. But then, you can sell,/donate/throw away the tripod and head and it's still cheaper than the Gitzo Lateral Arm. :-)

There are also things like the Gitzo Lateral Arm, but less expensive alternatives. <https://www.amazon.com/ALZO-Horizontal-Accessory-Supporting-Photography/dp/B0015ASKMY>

And this one.

Never have it just right with 'pods and bags , Mike
