     During WWII, The Japanese had an autogyro, the Kayaba Ka-1/Ka-2, that was 
based on the American Kellett KD-1A.  It was used for artillery spotting and 
anti-submarine warfare.  A small Army-operated escort carrier, the Akitsu Maru 
was outfitted with these from August 1944 until her sinking in November 1944 
while on its way to Guadalcanal.
