Gotta disagree.

I just tried it on the beach scene I just posted about. While I could get used to the different way of adjusting levels, and probably get to know how to do something close to the LCE I do in PS, I found the Local Adjustment Tool wanting.

With an image like this, making a mask of, say her sweater, is quick, easy - and precise. With the LAT, I found it difficult to avoid halos, with a line of lightness inside or of darkness outside the sweater boundaries. Certainly I should be able to become better at it, but can't see it being as accurate as a mask. And in this case, the mask is much quicker.

There are other images, with quite complex subjects, that I want to treat differently than background. It does look like the Range Mask adjustment might help with that. That would be a nice thing to add to the Select & Mask tool in PS.

With a masked layer, I can alter the amount of effect by changing opacity. I don't see an easy way to do that sort of instant adjustment to a set of Local Adjustment brush strokes?

In any case, I would say that fairly similar results are possible, but it ain't
"exactly the same".
