Seemed a tad soon to upend the E-M1Mk2 but perhaps time for global shutter,
hand held high res mode?

I've been loosely following these rumors. Disturbing. First, no new camera until perhaps too late for Spring in Bhutan. Then, what the heck will it be?

I'd be happy with an E-M5 III with the 24MP sensor, faster electronics, etc.
Hand held HR would be wonderful.

They seem quite unlikely to enter FF market like Nik to compete with Sonnie
despite having a bunch of FF patents.

A question is whether they have the resources to both go FF and keep up the pace of µ4/3 development. If not, and they damage their bread and butter business, it becomes You Bet Your Company.

I spite of their slow, rather low key roll out of mirrorless FF, I believe I read that Canon is now the largest Mless seller in Japan. With Nikon announcing their bid, this would seem an inauspicious time. How big can the potential market be?

Historically, in spite of all the reasons why it shouldn't be so, BIG jumps have always involved more MPs. Something like an E-M1 II with 32-36 MP sensor as new E-M2?

The hints of big increase in function, and in $$, might point this way. Without knowledge of Oly product line profits, their recent emphasis on big, fast, more expensive, Pro lenses may mean they see more profit in higher ticket, higher margin products. They have said that a corporate goal is profit/ROI, even if at the expense of lower overall sales growth. Rumors too of a Pro 150-400 mm lens.

Their lenses already handily out resolve the current sensors, so a boost in MP is technically feasible, if the sensor tech for noise and DR is there. If the sensor comes from a source not available, at least at first, to Panny, it's a move that at once both jumps ahead in µ4/3, leapfrogs Fuji and gets the MPs where those who think that's where it's at may start to think of them as comparable to FF.

Truth be told, folks also tend to equate high price with high function/quality
. . .

Look at the number of people who seem to think a 24 MP APS-C sensor is somehow significantly higher rez than 20 MP µ4/3, rather than a different shape. MPs still seem to rule a significant part of markets. Many's the time I've been in stores, hearing sales people answering questions about which is best with MP numbers.
