fled to the Soviet Union and thereby saved their lives). Needless to say, it was the easiest of visits, but I am
glad I went. This is something I have been meaning to do for a long time.

That sounds like an emotionally powerful visit. I can't imagine the feelings
that might emerge, as I have no such history.
