Works if
i) you keep the same camera forever

But in that time, I have owned, and still do several different cameras. When I
got it all I had was a Sony R1. I then moved to a Nikon D3, which I stll own
and use, a Leica M9, which I have sold, and an Oly em5ii and a Panasonic GX7,
both of which I still use. So you're off the mark there. No big effort to stay
up with it.Just keep getting the latest version of ACR.

ii) you don’t need to update/upgrade the software you use for processing the
image files, for instance when getting a newer camera

A nd yet I did it for almost 20 years! finally I needed to upgrade to Win 10
for PS, or I would still be using the same PC today. Again, advantage PC,
dollar for dollar.

iii) you like loosing time (and money) on tinkering with hardware, and fixing
bugs and other goodies ...

And yet I didn't have to do that.

Else, long term peace of mind and easiness of use are worth a few bucks IMHO …

But for you it may be just a few bucks, but for others of us it's lots of
bucks. Two to three times the bucks to be exact. I'm not Charles Koch, but I'm
glad you are in that bracket for you.If it makes you feel better, keep drinking
the Kool-Aid.
