Haven't read about this in awhile. Much data came out in Neitz lab in Seattle
and Jordan.

There was only a functional test in past using silk swatches. Curiously they
only tested women of course as it is essentially impossible for men to be
tetrachromat. In above study only a very small percentage of women
genetically shown to have the anomalous trichromacy or tetrachromat could
actually use it. In the early functional studies there were some men (working
daily with color) that could perceive the same number of hues. Whether this
held up
with true genetically determined tetrachromats that are highly functional
tetrachromats I do not know. Post processing does play a role as well as the
pattern of the anomalous cone distribution as determined by random X
inactivation.
