     Spanish and Portugese railways are "Iberian Gauge" railways, being 5' 5 
21/32" wide:

     Most railways are 4' 8 1/2", which folklore says goes back to the distance 
between the wheels of a Roman war charriot, which in turn were that distance so 
as to accomodate a pair of horses.

     As you can see from the Wikipedia page, there are wider ones.
