Thanks Moose, the 90/2.8 is brand new. I believe it is just the system behavior 
of the autofocus detection. 

Manual focus, I'm not as experienced as you certainly are, so my technique 
needs some practice. The peaking is useful but sometimes gets in the way. At 
F1.2 and close subject that is not holding still, I probably need auto-focus. 
So much to still re-learn.

I gave my smaller a6000 to my grand daughter. I do miss the size, so a 2nd 
camera that fits in small backpack is in the future, not sure it will be Sonie. 
There are a lot of new camera options coming all the time.

As to the focus EVF magnification on manual, I recently acquired the 
Voigtlander 12/5.6. With that lens the higher EVF magnification is very 
helpful. So the focus mag is focal length dependent.
