Thanks, guys!  Bill: Yes, that is indeed a contrabassoon.  It made a nice frame, dontcha think?   Moose:  Yes, there were a couple of contras in those photos from the Vienna musical instrument museum I visited.

The regular bassoon is about 8 feet long and folded once. The contra is about 16 feet long and eliptical. It is to the regular bassoon as the double bass is to the cello, but more so. It plays down to the lowest B-flat on the piano, and with an extension, down to A.  That low, you feel the pitch as much or more than you hear it.
