Jim,
   Grackles are pretty clever and may get into acorns in a number of ways:
pecking or dropping from height. Birds, particularly those in the Corvidae
Family (jays, crows and ravens) are very bright. A good video seen here:

  Its a bit long but interesting. Side note, the man giving the lecture
lived down the street from me when we were kids.
