I have something (for Mac) called “Little Snitch.” It does what a firewall
does, but for *outgoing* connections. For each one, you get a notifier, with
which you can either permanently allow or disallow the connection, or you can
allow or disallow the connection for the duration of that program’s execution.
You can further restrict allow/block based on host and port, host, port, or
“all.”

It’s amazing how many connections freeware software initiates! If I don’t
recognize the host, I just deny it. This has the welcome side-effect of
sometimes stopping “nag ware” or “upgrade ware” that keeps telling you to buy
the paid version.

It’s also amazing how many programs contact “amazonaws.com”. I think Shamazon
has gotten too big for its britches, and so, besides not buying there, I’m
beginning to delete marginally-useful software that uses Amazon Web Services.

Anyway, get thee the Windows-equivalent of an outbound connection checker, and
you’ll be able to quickly track down any malware you might have that depends on
phoning home to the mother ship.
