At the race track, I'll certainly use a filter if I'm shooting through
the fence openings. Tire tar (melted rubber) spatters the lens, camera
and face. An hour there and your face looks like you had 200 spiders
pooping on you. On a boat? You betcha.  Blowing sand? Sure. Otherwise,
I go commando.
