A year or two ago my wife gave a tip to a barman in a pub in northern England.
He was somewhere between embarrassed, bemused, and annoyed. We were
subsequently told that only "North Americans" [mercifully we are not
'Americans'] put down tips in UK pubs and were automatically labelled as such,
often with much scorn.
