Some international perspective...

In the Netherlands we had DAF cars (it is still a truck brand
<http://www.daf.global/en-en>) with a special kind of automatic
transmission, called variomatic <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variomatic>.

One of the features of the system was that it could drive the same speed in
forward gear as in backward.

After the demise of the brand the Dutch enjoyed 'backward drive racing'
with the DAFs, and it really is a pity I couldn't find a subtitled version
on yt. The guy talking is quite a famous comedian here..
