I'm still trying to get more comfortable with the ZD 50-200 lens, so I went back to the bee with this longer lens.  Though I can focus closer with the ZD 14-54, the extra reach of the longer lens gives much better detail.

I'll master it yet!

Looks to me as though you are pretty darn close, already! :-)

As to closer focus, I use achromatic (two element) close-up lenses for that. Although they may be used on any lens, my main use is on my primary zooms. This can work very well. I have hundreds of excellent results, but many of the lenses are hard to find and specific combos may or may not work well.

The other choice is auto extension tubes. Here are some examples generally relevant to your lens. <http://zone-10.com/tope2/main.php?g2_itemId=4534>

I use cheap ones, and there are a lot of contacts, so stacking two is inviting the need to wipe the contacts. They also don't have perfect mounts, so you would need to hold using the lens itself or the tripod foot, to take weight off the mounts.
