Depends on your definition of "catastrophic." I'm thinking, losing one or two
photos is not as bad as losing all of them.

If your hard drive fails hard, and you have a backup, you replace the hard
drive and restore the backup and you're back to where you were. That's why I
have sturr on three hard drives and keep the memopry cards for anything
important.

If an SSD starts to get "bit rot," and you don't discover that you can no
longer view the only scan you had of your great-grandmother's photo (hard copy
gone long ago) until your backups have "rolled over," losing the older backups,
what do you do? Kiss the memory of great-granny away. And that, class, is why
we have backups. And I won't put things on the cloud, because I don't trust
something I can't see.

I'll take hard failure and known backup over a "maybe" failure that you might
not discover for a long time, any day.
