BMW manufacturers the X5 front end with everything outside of the
frame structure as a prefabricated plastic assembly. It has no
structural strength and contains no metal other than fasteners. All
the safety structure is contained in the main body assembly. This
design saves hundreds of pounds in the vehicle.
