I don’t think shapers are still as used as then. It was cheap but VERY long …

I never got to the point when the machines were digital. And I was surprised 
some years ago when I discovered that the new generations of engineers were no 
longer taught the essentials of mechanics (manually) using them. I bet you can 
now pilot these machines from home … sort of drones for mechanics … well, at 
least it would save them from the noise, and the smell of lubricants ... ;-)
